| Stephen L. Tanner Stephen L. Tanner, Professor of English at Brigham Young University, grew up in Ogden, Utah, served a mission in the Northern States, and received a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Utah and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He taught at the University of Idaho before coming to BYU in 1978. He is the author of Ken Kesey, Paul Elmer More: Literary Criticism as the History of Ideas, Lionel Trilling, and Ernest Haycox. He has published widely in periodicals and contributed chapters to books, mainly in the area of American Literature. He did the chapter "Fiction: 1900-1930" for American Literary Scholarship: An Annual for the years 1986-88. As a Fulbright Lecturer he has visited Brazil three times (1974-76, 1983, 1989) and Portugal once (1979). He and his wife, Madlyn Gillespie Tanner, are the parents of three children.
