Description
The Mormon Literature Database includes records of speeches known as "firesides" that are given within the Church Educational System, provided that those firesides are of a general enough nature that a printed version of the speech is published. The MLDB does not include records of the many local fireside addresses routinely given within LDS church units.

Genre History
The fireside talk has a long tradition within Mormon culture. These are usually speeches that are given to a more select audience (typically youth or young adults) and in the evening. These speeches are typically religious and inspirational in nature. While it is rare that such speeche are actually given beside a real fire, the name suggests a kind of intimacy and informality approximated by the speakers. The Church Educational System sponsors general firesides for youth or for young adults, typically at a large venue such as BYU's Marriott Center, with the event being simultaneously broadcast through satellite transmission to church members around the world.
