Genre History
Mormon Young Adult fiction traces its origins to the Home Literature movement begun in the late nineteenth century and is exemplified by the works of Nephi Anderson, B. H. Roberts, and Susa Young Gates. Much of the fiction put out by Mormon presses like Deseret Book can be considered Young Adult fiction whether identified as such or not, because of subject matter and approach. Indeed, it was the success of Young Adult novels in the late 1970s and early 1980s that fueled the growth of Mormon publishing. Jack Weyland, Blaine and Brenton Yorganson, Shirly Sealy, and Dean Hughes all produced YA works that materially affected the growth of Mormon writing and publication. In the twentieth century the Young Adult genre has been among the fastest growing types of LDS literature, especially in terms of LDS authors reaching beyond the Mormon market and succeeding through national publishers. YA authors who have managed to publish both within the Mormon and national markets include Lael Littke, Louise Plummer, Carol Lynch Williams, and Dean Hughes. See the "Survey of Mormon Young Adult Writers" by Chris Crowe and Jesse Crisler. |
